Coming to Tartu by Tallinn-Tartu road we suggest a tour at Põltsamaa Castle and  Wine Cellar.

In the Põltsamaa castle we will see the old fortress of Teutonic order constructed on the banks of the river in 1272. Here was the residence of Livonia's King Magnus. The castle was rebuilt by Woldemar Johann von Lauw in the 18th century as a grand rococo-style palace. The museum gives an overview of the glorious past of the castle, town and the parish. We will see the furniture from former church of Tartu University in the lutheran church built into the old cannon tower. The rococo palace and the church were burnt down in 1941 but the church was restored by 1952 as the very first church in soviet (Stalin) time.

The wine cellar of Põltsamaa Felix Ltd. offers local natural apple and berry wines, some of which are fresh and spunky whereas others are slowly seasoned and dignified. There are tasting packages of 3 as well as 5 wines available. There is a food museum located in the wine cellar while the same factory produced as the very first in the world food for astronauts (soviet cosmonauts).
